As global excitement for anime and manga continues to surge and fuel the passionate international fan culture reshaping storytelling and sharing worldwide, JAPAN HOUSE Los Angeles welcomes professional manga artist Kazuo Maekawa for an interactive, hands-on workshop at JAPAN HOUSE and also at Anime Expo. Known for his work on the Ace Attorney series, Maekawa’s special sessions will offer a rare opportunity to learn directly from a working manga creator.

In this engaging workshop, attendees will be given professional insight into the core principles of manga creation, explore character design, expressive facial storytelling, panel composition, pacing, and the techniques artists use to guide readers through emotion, action, and timing. Participants will also gain valuable context for the cultural roots of manga in Japan and the evolution of its storytelling methods alongside the global rise of anime and animation.

A key focus of the session is the creation of a 4-panel comic, known as a “yonkoma.” A yonkoma is a classic Japanese comic format made up of four sequential panels, typically arranged vertically, designed to deliver a complete story in a compact and highly structured form. Each panel plays a specific narrative role from setup, development, twist, and punchline, creating a concise storytelling rhythm that is both efficient and impactful. While often comedic, yonkoma is also widely used for slice-of-life moments, character-driven storytelling, and emotional beats.

Under expert guidance, participants will create their own original yonkoma comic from concept to completion, learning how to transform ideas into clear, compelling visual narratives within a limited space. Whether you’re a beginner, an aspiring illustrator, or a lifelong anime and manga fan, this workshop offers a rare chance to practice authentic industry techniques while joining a global celebration of anime and manga culture.

In celebration of the new exhibition, “WASHOKU | Nature and Culture in Japanese Cuisine,” explore how Los Angeles has helped shape Japanese cuisine’s rise as a global culinary phenomenon.

Washoku, Japan’s traditional food culture, is rooted in seasonality, balance, and respect for nature. Recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage, it reflects both culinary practice and cultural identity while continuing to evolve through global exchange.

Los Angeles has played a central role in that evolution since the 1960s, when the California Roll helped introduce Japanese cuisine to a broader American audience. Today, California is home to roughly 20% of all Japanese restaurants in the United States, and Los Angeles remains a hub for culinary innovation. Japanese food culture is woven into the region’s dining landscape, from pioneering institutions like Katsu-ya to Studio City’s famed “Sushi Row” along Ventura Boulevard, home to more than 100 sushi restaurants. The city’s influence continues to shape contemporary food trends, from sustainable sourcing and plant-based cuisine to the mainstream popularity of matcha and Japanese-style sandos (sandwiches), once everyday staples of Japan’s konbini (convenience stores).

The Experience

The program begins with a screening of Beyond Sushi, a documentary tracing the global journey of Japanese cuisine and California’s role in its evolution.

Following the screening, chefs Shinji Kugita and Derek Wilcox will discuss modern Japanese cuisine in Los Angeles, emerging food trends, and the future of washoku as it continues to evolve across cultures and generations. Kugita represents Katsu-ya Group, a defining force in the Los Angeles dining scene since 1997, while Wilcox brings his expertise from Miura in Beverly Hills, a Michelin-listed restaurant known for its precision-driven, contemporary approach to Japanese cuisine.

During the conversation, guests will enjoy a curated lunch box featuring popular Japanese food trends, including egg sandos, katsu (pork cutlet) sandos, and matcha lattes. Together, these dishes offer a taste of how Japanese cuisine has been adapted, reimagined, and embraced throughout California.

This spring, JAPAN HOUSE Los Angeles welcomes 20th-generation chasen master Tango Tanimura for a special talk and live demonstration exploring the artistry, history, and cultural significance of this remarkable tool.

Over centuries, the implements of the Japanese tea ceremony have been carefully refined to elevate the preparation of matcha. Among them, the chasen remains the most recognizable. Each whisk is hand-carved from a single piece of bamboo and features approximately 70 to 100 fine prongs, thicker at the base and tapering to delicate tips. Bamboo’s natural flexibility creates a unique balance, resilient enough for vigorous whisking, yet gentle enough to glide across the bowl. With each motion, the chasen transforms matcha powder and water into a smooth, velvety foam enhancing both texture and aroma.

The art of chasen-making began over 500 years ago in Takayama Village, now part of Nara Prefecture, a region known for its high-quality bamboo. Passed down through generations, these techniques have been carefully preserved within family lineages. Today, Takayama continues to produce the majority of the world’s chasen, each one meticulously handmade using locally grown bamboo.

As the heir to this centuries-old tradition, Tango Tanimura carries forward a legacy shaped by precision, intuition, and deep cultural knowledge. Working entirely by hand, his practice resists mechanization and reflects the enduring spirit of Takayama craftsmanship.

For this special engagement, Tanimura will travel from his home in Takayama to JAPAN HOUSE Los Angeles and present an artist talk and demonstration. Join us for an afternoon exploring a living cultural tradition in its most refined and intimate form.

What is washoku? Much more than its literal translation as “Japanese food,” washoku is a unique culinary tradition shaped by the distinctive environment of the Japanese archipelago, thousands of years of ingenuity, and the Japanese people’s deep reverence for and relationship with nature. Built upon the foundational pillars of rice and fish, washoku represents not just sustenance, but a sophisticated cultural achievement that balances taste, technique, and a deep attunement to seasonality.

The exhibition, “WASHOKU | Nature and Culture in Japanese Cuisine,” on view at JAPAN HOUSE Los Angeles from May 22 through October 18, 2026, delves into the core elements, evolution, and connection to culture of this UNESCO-recognized intangible cultural heritage. The program has been developed in collaboration with the National Museum of Nature and Science in Tokyo and The Asahi Shimbun and presented here outside Japan for the first time.

Through displays featuring natural specimens, food models, multimedia, and interactive experiences introduced across four areas of concentration, this exhibition invites visitors to explore the ingredients, techniques, history, and ideas that come to form and define Japanese cuisine – and to consider how food has come to express the values and environment of Japan.

We hope this journey through Washoku reveals not only the richness of Japanese cuisine, but also the enduring relationship between nature and culture that lies at its heart.

To celebrate the Pictograms: Iconic Japanese Designs exhibition, JAPAN HOUSE Los Angeles presents a special hands-on workshop inviting guests to create their very own pictograms. As a fun creative outing for design lovers and families alike, participants will take home their completed pictogram and will receive exclusive pictogram badges, serving as a unique souvenir of the event and the exhibition spotlighting this design legacy.

Pictograms are an integral part of everyday life, appearing everywhere on street signs, in train stations, and across digital platforms such as computers and smartphones. They are visual icons that are designed to communicate information across languages and cultures. Japan has played a pivotal role in the development of pictograms, including introducing the first full set of Olympic pictograms for the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games and the first emoji, which is now used globally as a universal visual language.

This workshop will be led by Daigo Daikoku, Art Director and CEO and Kosuke Tsurube, Senior Designer of Nippon Design Center. The program will open with an educational presentation introducing Nippon Design Center (NDC)’s extensive body of work, followed by an overview of the history and development of pictograms within the field of visual communication.

After this fascinating introduction, participants will be guided through a design session to make their own pictograms. Daikoku will conduct a live sketching demonstration to show how to create a pictogram step-by-step, sharing professional tips and design guidelines. Using specially prepared worksheets modeled after those used by NDC when creating pictograms for the Experience Japan Pictogram project, guests will be prompted to create pictograms that focus on wide-ranging themes including culture, food, landmarks, nature, and transportation, allowing them to personalize their designs.

The program will conclude with a show-and-tell where guests can share their creations, fostering dialog and creative engagement amongst the attendees.

The workshop will be held twice (with same content in each program) and is open to guests ages 10 and up. Participants under the age of 14 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
