Japan’s Theatrical Boom | From KOKUHO to Japanese Animation
At this year’s Academy Awards, the kabuki epic KOKUHO, the highest-grossing live-action Japanese film in history, is nominated for Best Makeup and Hairstyling, bringing Japanese cinema to Hollywood’s biggest stage. But this is only a glimpse of how Japanese movies are currently experiencing an extraordinary surge in global reach and audience enthusiasm. The recent Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle set a new all-time record for an international film in the United States and has surpassed $700 million worldwide, while Japan’s domestic box office shattered its own all-time revenue record in 2025. Admissions climbed to nearly 189 million, the second-highest figure in history, with audiences returning across every demographic: seniors, families, and young moviegoers alike. Even as the North American box office continues to struggle with attendance well below pre-pandemic levels, Japanese storytelling is resonating with global audiences like never before, from anime blockbusters to culturally rich live-action dramas. What’s driving this momentum, and how far can it carry?
Join us for a special evening in the Cultural Awareness Series, made possible through the generous support of MUFG Bank, as leading voices reflect on the artistic evolution and international momentum defining this exciting chapter in Japanese film history.
KOKUHO producer Chieko Murata (Myriagon Studio) shares how a film rooted in kabuki tradition traveled from its Cannes premiere to an Oscar nomination and a domestic box office record; The panel also discusses the strategy behind anime’s record-breaking theatrical expansion in North America and how streaming and theatrical success fuel each other with Aniplex of America’s president, Yosuke Kodaka; and GEM Partners CEO Aya Umezu, Japan’s leading entertainment data analyst, illuminates the audience trends, fan culture, and structural forces that set Japan’s market apart.
Moderated by Bloomberg managing editor Lucas Shaw, this lively panel discussion will be followed by a reception featuring a generous selection of cuisine by Katsuya, providing a relaxed setting to connect and continue the conversation.
One night after Hollywood’s biggest night, join us for this unmissable evening exploring the past, present, and future of Japanese cinema in the global spotlight.
Curator’s Talk | Pictograms Exhibition
To celebrate the opening of Pictograms: Iconic Japanese Designs, join us for a behind-the-scenes look at this groundbreaking exhibition on the art of visual communication. In a lively design dialogue, exhibition curator Daigo Daikoku, CEO and Art Director of Nippon Design Center (NDC) USA, will be joined by Julia Huang, founder and CEO of Intertrend Communications and chair of the Arts and Cultural Committee for the Long Beach 2028 Olympic Games, for a conversation about the creative process, cultural roots, and global reach of pictogram design.
The pictogram story begins at the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games, where designers at the Nippon Design Center faced a unique challenge: how to guide visitors from around the world during the first Olympics ever held in Asia. Their solution was a set of refined symbols that established a universal visual language that still guides global wayfinding today, and inspired the wide-ranging exhibition now on view.
For this talk, art director Daikoku will introduce NDC, the Olympic legacy of pictograms, and his own illustrious career in design. Particular projects featured in the exhibition, including the recent “Experience Japan Pictograms” initiative re-imagining pictograms for today’s global travelers, will also be unpacked to show how Daikoku and his team create these visual tools to help Japanese institutions, small towns, businesses, and government entities communicate information visually while representing cultural customs and traditions. Together, Daikoku and Huang will also explore design’s role in cultural storytelling and global communication—from the symbols that guide us through airports and stadiums to the visual challenges and opportunities ahead as Los Angeles steps onto the world’s stage.
With the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics having just reached an exciting conclusion, the FIFA World Cup 2026 arriving in Los Angeles this summer, and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics on the horizon, there has never been a better time to discover the past, present, and future of this groundbreaking graphic form from one of its most notable creative luminaries.
Perfect for design enthusiasts, art lovers, and Olympic fans alike, this evening is the ideal way to explore the iconic people and ideas behind the exhibition, and spark your curiosity for whenever you plan your visit.

Pictograms: Iconic Japanese Designs
Pictograms: Iconic Japanese Designs explores how Japan has shaped the global use of pictograms as a universal visual language. Used daily in transportation, technology, and public spaces, pictograms communicate across cultures through clarity and simplicity. The exhibition highlights Japan’s design tradition, focused on precision, balance, and refinement, and its lasting influence on visual communication worldwide.
Curated and designed by NDC under the artistic direction of Daikoku Daigo, the exhibition at JAPAN HOUSE explores the underlying creative process within pictograms and highlights the crucial role they play in facilitating our lives. Presentations unfoldover four main thematic zones and a visitor participation experience. The first zone addresses the question, “What are Pictograms?”—while the second traces the fascinating history of pictograms and their connections to Japan. In the third zone, visitors are guided through the methods and tools NDC designers employ to achieve peak communicative effectiveness, and in the fourth, amusing installations invite reimagining what pictograms can be, moving beyond flat graphics to engage their creative potential in three-dimensional and interactive forms. A unique addition to this zone is the “My LA Pictogram” project, where selections from student submissions from Los Angeles and beyond capture their vision of L.A. through original pictogram designs.
We hope visitors will be inspired to think creatively about the pictograms that permeate their surroundings, and channel the elements of Japanese design shared in the exhibition to craft their own pictogram at our “pictogram studio,” perhaps celebrating an important aspect of their lives or representing their favorite part of Los Angeles.

Cultural Awareness Series From Vine to Glass | An Evening of Award-Winning Wine & Dinner
When it comes to wine, California needs little introduction; the state produces 90 percent of American wine and is the fourth-largest wine region in the world. What many may not realize is that Japanese and Japanese American winemakers have been integral to this story for well over a century, to shape California’s wine culture and establish legacies. This program, part of the Cultural Awareness Series, celebrates three exceptional family- and woman-owned wineries that blend tradition and innovation in their world-class vineyards: Freeman Vineyard & Winery, Kazumi Wines, and Mikami Vineyards. These small-production, award-winning wines are often served at high-profile events and are highly sought-after by aficionados, making this a rare opportunity to experience all three in one evening.
In this vibrant talk and tasting along with food pairings, guests will be virtually transported to sun-drenched slopes cooled by gentle maritime breezes, learning about the backstory of these remarkable producers and the diverse landscapes and techniques of California wine-making. Freeman Vineyard & Winery presents cool-climate “Akiko’s Cuvee” Pinot Noir and “Ryofu” Chardonnay, capturing silk-like textures, bright, nuanced flavors from the fog-laced hills of Sebastopol; their wines have been featured at the highest levels of international diplomacy, including a landmark White House State Dinner for Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in 2015, and more recently, a 2024 State Department luncheon celebrating the visit of Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. Kazumi Wines introduces Napa Valley Koshu alongside Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon, offering vibrant aromatics, lively minerality, and a subtle interplay of depth and finesse, a rare expression of Japanese heritage in California winemaking. Mikami Vineyards showcases hand-crafted Zinfandel and GSM (Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre), cultivated from a century-old vine in Lodi, delivering concentrated fruit, layered complexity, and a rich, lingering finish.
The evening culminates with a panel discussion featuring speakers from each vineyard, providing behind-the-scenes insights into their philosophies, craft, and heritage. Participants will then enjoy a thoughtfully curated tasting and food pairing, navigated by Sommelier Alice Hama, and catered by Soma Suisan, the acclaimed new L.A. restaurant founded by a famed tuna importer from Tokyo’s Tsukiji Market. The menu of delectable bites is designed to highlight the distinctive character of each wine.
For aspiring wine experts and curious explorers alike, the program is a celebration of Japanese and Japanese American winemaking.
The organizers and venue assume no liability for any injury, loss, or damage related to alcohol consumption or event participation.
Sing For Science | Ice Cream and its Multisensory Rewards with Lucius and Dr. Ladan Shams
Join JAPAN HOUSE Los Angeles for a special co-presentation with Sing For Science, a popular podcast recognized as one of Apple Podcasts’ top 10 music interview podcast (past guests include Sia, David Byrne, and Kacey Musgraves). Inspired by the themes explored in our current “Looks Delicious!” exhibition, this live recording invites audiences into a dynamic conversation about how artistry, perception, and imagination shape the way we understand—and crave—food. To complement the program’s exploration of sensory experience, guests will also enjoy Van Leeuwen ice cream, a sweet nod to Lucius’s song “Ice Cream.”
The program features the acclaimed Los Angeles–based band Lucius, known for their intricate harmonies and collaborations with artists such as Harry Styles and Brandi Carlile. Their song “Ice Cream”—which delves into nostalgia, sensory pleasure, and emotional texture—forms a natural connection to the exhibition’s celebration of visual delight and the whimsical world of Japanese food representation. Joining them is Dr. Ladan Shams, Professor of Psychology, Bioengineering, and Neuroscience at UCLA, and one of the world’s leading experts on multisensory perception. Her research into how the brain integrates sight, sound, taste, and memory offers scientific insight into the very processes that make hyper-realistic food models so captivating.
Guided by podcast host and producer Matt Whyte, the discussion will explore how perception, creativity, and cultural representation intersect—echoing the craftsmanship and sensory artistry at the heart of Japanese food replica culture. This collaboration introduces JAPAN HOUSE Los Angeles to Sing For Science’s broad international audience, furthering both organizations’ missions to foster cross-cultural understanding through creativity, design, and sensory experience.

Pacific Rim 18: TasteMaking LA | Design around food, connecting people across cultures
Experience an immersive design showcase in Los Angeles highlighting an inspiring collaboration between Tama Art University (Tokyo, Japan) and ArtCenter College of Design (Pasadena, California). This special exhibition explores how design and food culture can bridge people and traditions across continents, reimagining the rituals of dining through innovative student projects that span from street food to fine dining, and from tableware and lighting to the social customs that shape how we share a meal.
Since 2006, Tama Art University and ArtCenter College of Design have partnered through the Pacific Rim multidisciplinary education collaboration, an ongoing international exchange that addresses themes such as natural disasters, sustainability, ecology, health and well-being, and global food culture through research and design. The program celebrates creative solutions born from cross-cultural dialogue between Japan and the United States.
Through this collaboration, students explore diverse cultural perspectives examining customs, languages, and traditions, then propose responses and design-driven solutions that reflect a shared global vision.
JAPAN HOUSE Los Angeles previously hosted the 2019 iteration of the Pacific Rim collaborative studio focused on street culture and art, and the 2023 edition centered on finding beauty and meaning in urban life following the pandemic.
This showcase marks the 18th Pacific Rim collaborative studio, featuring final projects from ten student teams. JAPAN HOUSE Los Angeles is delighted to welcome back this program as part of our continued commitment to supporting art, education, and cross-cultural exchange between the U.S. and Japan.
Japanese Fermentation | Craft Your Own Soy Sauce
Join us at JAPAN HOUSE Los Angeles for the inaugural workshop in a new series celebrating Japan’s rich fermentation culture. For millennia, fermentation has shaped human civilization, from preserving foods through long winters to creating alcoholic beverages. In Japan, it plays a special role: fermented ingredients are the basis of Japanese cuisine’s unique flavor profile. Many of Japan’s centuries-old brands are actually fermentation-related companies, from sake breweries to soy sauce producers. As scientific studies continue to reveal fermentation’s health benefits, these traditional methods are finding eager new practitioners worldwide. Led by fermentation expert Yoko Maeda Lamn, this hands-on session explores the traditional methods, authentic flavors, and cultural significance of Japan’s beloved fermented foods—miso (fermented soybean paste), koji (fermentation starter made from rice or barley and mold), and that superstar condiment, shoyu (soy sauce).
Explore Soy Sauce Traditions
First, discover the five main types of soy sauce: Koikuchi, Usukuchi, Shiro, Tamari, and Saishikomi. Then, gain a behind-the-scenes knowledge of the traditional production process, including key ingredients like soybeans, wheat, koji, and brine, and the time-honored fermentation methods that create their distinct flavors. Explore the character of wooden-barrel (Kioke) soy sauce and how artisanal techniques preserve centuries of tradition. The workshop will also explore soy sauce production in the U.S., from emerging craft soy sauce breweries to global leaders like Kikkoman.
Hands-On Soy Sauce Making
In this session, participants will combine koji made from soybeans and wheat with brine to prepare moromi and experience the very beginning of soy sauce fermentation. The focus is on observing how fermentation progresses over time and how the mixture gradually transforms into soy sauce. Participants will also learn key points on what to look for at home so they can enjoy watching the fermentation continue after the workshop.
Flavorful Comparative Tasting
Participants will also enjoy a tasting of five curated soy sauces, including Kioke-brewed, JAS-standard, and U.S. varieties, paired with simple foods such as tofu, avocado, and eggs. Through Lamn’s guidance, participants will refine their palates and learn to identify umami, aroma, and pairing versatility. The session will also introduce the Kioke Project, highlighting the cultural and environmental importance of preserving Japan’s traditional wooden-barrel fermentation methods.
Whether you are a gourmet foodie, home cook, or simply curious about Japanese culinary traditions, this workshop offers a rare opportunity to experience the art of fermentation hands-on, deepen your appreciation for soy sauce, and bring a piece of Japan’s culinary heritage home.
